Samp sold the midfielder to Sporting in the summer of 2017 and he was then transferred to Manchester United in January 2020 for €46.5m plus bonuses.
While the Blucerchiati claim they are owed a €4.6m cut of that fee, the Portuguese side released their own statement today.

“Sporting CP understands, supported by the jurisprudence of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, that in view of the unilateral termination of the contract in the summer of 2018 by the player with the club, that clause is no longer valid.
“Sampdoria therefore did not have any future rights in the contracts signed later, namely the transfer to Manchester United. FIFA and, if necessary, the civil courts will fully clarify the issue.”
Curiously, Sporting are also at the centre of another row with FIFA regarding Sinisa Mihajlovic, who won his appeal to €3m compensation for unfair dismissal.
That too is still in the air, as the club is refusing to pay him any more money after an initial sum.
Mihajlovic’s lawyers have threatened to ask FIFA for Sporting to be excluded from Europe as punishment.
