Former Catania player Gionatha Spinesi says today’s match-fixing allegations are ‘the blackest page in the club’s history’.

It emerged this morning that at least five of the Elefanti’s matches were being investigated as part of a match-fixing scandal, with arrest warrants issued for club officials.

“Hearing the news of the investigation into Catania this morning was like a punch in the gut,” Spinesi told ItaSportPress.

“To think of all the sacrifices that were made to bring joy and prestige to the city, then to see that skyscraper crumble one summer morning hurts a lot.

“The wheels had come off some time ago, unfortunately, but it’s one thing to fail, as can happen to any club when things go wrong, it’s another to blot the history of Catania in this way.

“This morning the blackest page in the club’s history was written. Now it will be difficult to explain to the children how the club has been hit by this storm.

“I just hope that after this storm the sun comes out, and that one door has closed so another can open.

“Catania are not afraid of Serie D, Catania just want to move forward with dignity, even playing with the amateurs.”
