Leonardo Spinazzola was named Man of the Match by UEFA after Italy beat Turkey 3-0. ‘It really did give us goosebumps.’

This was in his home stadium of the Stadio Olimpico and the Euro 2020 opener, with Merih Demiral’s own goal before Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne strikes.

“The emotions started on the bus towards the stadium, seeing all the people in the streets. It really did give us goosebumps,” the Roma full-back told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a perfect performance. We were patient, we moved the ball around well. Then afterwards I saw my son in the stands, it was emotional.”

Spinazzola received the Man of the Match award from UEFA and was credited with an assist for his shot parried into the path of Ciro Immobile.

“I am a pretty calm guy, I sleep well before games. It’s because I know what I have to do and what I am capable of, so I’m relaxed.”

Spinazzola was non-stop up and down the left flank this evening.

“The coach always tells me to push forward and press, but sometimes I ask for a bit of a breather, it’s really tiring!

“We have a mix of incredible qualities in this squad, with great midfielders, forwards and defenders. Everyone brings something to the table.”
