Leonardo Spinazzola is expected to fly to Finland tomorrow for surgery on his Achilles tendon after the Roma left-back’s UEFA EURO 2020 was cut short.

The Italy international had two Man of the Match awards in the tournament, but pulled up during last night’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium.

He was stretchered off in tears and immediately diagnosed with an Achilles tendon tear, although the extent of the damage is not yet known.

Tuttomercatoweb and Sky Sport Italia cite sources within the Italy camp that the tests showed a subcutaneous rupture of the left Achilles tendon.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Roma have decided Spinazzola will visit specialist Professor Sakari Orava at the NEO Hospital in Turku, flying out tomorrow.

Surgery will probably be required, with an expected four to six months on the sidelines, depending on the degree of the tear to the tendon.

The 28-year-old made 39 competitive appearances for Roma last season, contributing two goals and eight assists.

Before the devastating injury, his performances at EURO 2020 had earned interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
