Leonardo Spinazzola will undergo Achilles tendon surgery in Finland today and is expected to return to action in six months.

The 28-year-old ruptured his Achilles tendon during Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 quarter-finals clash against Belgium on Friday.

Spinazzola was stretched off in tears and, on Saturday, he left Coverciano, heading to Rome to undergo further medical examinations.

Tests showed a subcutaneous rupture of the left Achilles tendon and according to Calciomercato.com, Spinazzola will undergo surgery in Finland today. Specialist Professor Sakari Orava will carry out the operation at the NEO Hospital in Turku.

According to the report, Spinazzola will remain out of action for up to six months.

The Roma full-back had been named MVP in two of Italy’s five games at EURO 2020 and Real Madrid, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur had been linked with securing his services after the continental competition.

Spinazzola joined Roma from Juventus in a swap deal with Luca Pellegrini in the summer of 2019.

His contract with the Giallorossi expires in June 2024.
