Roma and Italy left-back Leonardo Spinazzola is ready for his comeback nine months after tearing his Achilles tendon. ‘I want to do even more wonderful and difficult things than winning the Euros.’

He had been Italy’s star of the tournament up until suddenly pulling up during the quarter-final with Belgium in July 2021 clutching the back of his ankle.

Spinazzola had torn his Achilles tendon, a relatively rare and extremely serious injury that has kept him out for over nine months.

He was on the Roma bench for the first time in yesterday’s 2-1 Serie A win over Salernitana and could make his comeback this week.

“I feel good, I have come out of my shell after a few months that really were not easy, but I knew that I could count on this family. As always, everything passes by,” said Spinazzola at a public event.

“If I look back, I see lots of hard work and many wonderful things that helped me to grow. If I look forward to the future, I say that I want to do so much more in football, even more wonderful and difficult things than winning the Euros.”

The image of Spinazzola celebrating on the turf at Wembley with his crutches just days after surgery remains one of the most endearing of the tournament.

  1. The Azzurri have not been the same since he went out hurt. Eve3n though they managed to win the Euro he was the spark of that run. They have taken a clear dive since. Let’s hope he comes back better for Roma as well as the Azzurri.
