Roma are hoping that injured left-back Leonardo Spinazzola will be fully fit soon after the Christmas break.

The 28-year-old Italian became a household name this summer after his impressive performances for the Azzurri in their successful Euro 2020 campaign, but disaster struck after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the quarter-finals against Belgium.

Despite Spinazzola’s hopes that he’d be able to return in November, Corriere dello Sport reports that he won’t be fully match fit until the early February, with the severity of the injury requiring a carefully managed recovery.

The former Juventus defender has almost completed his physical rehabilitation exercises, carried out in both the gym and on the training pitch, and he will meet with Professor Lasse Lempainen, the Finnish surgeon who reconstructed his Achilles tendon, early next month to discuss his injury.

Should the consolation with Professor Lempainen go well, Spinazzola will be given the green light to start competitive preparations. This means gradually returning to squad training and slowly working back his match fitness.

Roma hope that Spinazzola will be fully available to coach Jose Mourinho in early February, a key period of the season as the race for a top four finish starts to take shape.
