Leonardo Spinazzola has made his comeback for Roma almost a year on from tearing his Achilles tendon during Italy’s EURO 2020 triumph.

The left-back was on target to be named player of the tournament until collapsing in agony during the 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium on July 2, 2021.

He had lacerated his Achilles tendon, a relatively rare injury in the world of football, and required complicated surgery with a very long recovery process.

There had been suggestions Spinazzola would be back in March, but the Giallorossi wanted to be sure he was fully fit before risking his return to the playing field.

That moment happened during this evening’s 2-0 Serie A defeat to Fiorentina at the Stadio Franchi, coming off the bench in the final minute.

Spinazzola turned 29 in March and this was his first Serie A appearance since April 25, 2021, another defeat away to Cagliari.

This comeback will lead fans to hope Spinazzola might play a part in the Conference League Final when Roma take on Feyenoord on May 25 in Tirana.

  1. @Jarod First of all Spina and his doctors have said that he’s been ready for the past month. I believe his surgeon said that the tendon is stronger now than it was before the injury.

The season isn’t over. Roma have the European final coming up, and don’t forget that the higher Roma finish in the league, the more money they get.

Then there’s Italy games; I’m sure he would like to feature against Argentina.

Bottom line: he’s physically fit, he’s been out for long enough already, and now that he’s 29 he’ll want to make the most of the last phase of his career.

  2. Agree with Bruno. As a player, knowing you’re fully fit, he won’t want to be seated on the sidelines while his teammates are playing such crucial games. They’re right to ease him back into the fold.
