He has become one of the Giallorossi’s best performers this season, although he had been on the verge of a transfer to Inter in exchange for Matteo Politano last year.

It went so far as medicals for both until the deal suddenly collapsed.

“These things happen, that’s all in the past now. Having said that, I do feel more psychologically free after that,” Spinazzola told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I am also trying to develop a little healthy egotism and have more shots on goal rather than always trying to pass it. Roma’s tactics changed too, as we can defend better and still have plenty of attacking options.

“The coach hasn’t changed at all, though. Even when there were all these reports of potential new coaches, Paulo Fonseca remained perfectly composed.

“Playing for Roma is a bit like being on a rollercoaster, because if you win then you’re a champion, if you lose then you belong in Serie C. There isn’t much of a balance.”

There have been big changes behind the scenes, with The Friedkin Group buying the club from James Pallotta.

“It is better having someone present, although I have to say the club made sure we lacked for nothing. The players go onto the field, but you do feel the presence of the President.”

Roma currently sit in joint third place with 14 points from seven games and their only ‘defeat’ was handed down by the Disciplinary Commission due to an irregularly-fielded player against Verona.

Juventus and Inter are the squads best equipped to win, but it’s impossible to say who will take the Scudetto. The group of potential winners is growing.

“We can only hope to have Roma in that group too, but our objective is to get back into the Champions League.”

Italy have qualified for Euro 2020 and the Nations League Final Four in October 2021.

“Now we can fight it out with the best. We’ve got a great group of players and Roberto Mancini passed on important ideas.”
