Dimitrios Nikolaou has fond memories of Spezia’s upset wins over Milan and Napoli earlier this season.

The Ligurian side currently sit 15th in the Serie A table, eight points ahead of 18th place Venezia, and they’ve turned things around under coach Thiago Motta recently, losing only once in their last five league outings, winning three and drawing the other.

Speaking in an interview with The Italian Football Podcast, Nikolaou first discussed the wins over Milan and Napoli.

“I only have beautiful memories from these games. It was so exciting. Playing these big teams, it’s so difficult to win but we made it and after we celebrated all together.

“But in my opinion you have to continue and you have to play all the games one at a time and you have to give 100% all the time.”

The 23-year-old Greek defender feels like Inter will win the league title this season.

“I think Inter will win the Serie A title because they are the most complete team and have the deepest squad to make the most changes. Yeah, Napoli vs. Inter will be a tough game for both teams as they are both good teams but you never know.”

Finally, Nikolaou gave his thoughts on Spezia coach Thiago Motta, who seemed destined for dismissal before turning things around in Liguria.

“The first thing about him is that he is a very, very good person. For me this is the key. He was a very big player and I learn something new from him every day.

“He is a very calm person and can tell us things pointing us in the right direction. We can learn much more from him.”

The 23-year-old Nikolaou has made 22 Serie A appearances this season for Spezia, for a total of 1980 minutes. In that time, he’s helped the side keep four clean sheets.

Spezia’s next game is against Fiorentina on Monday evening at 19.45 UK time.
