The COVID-19 cluster at Spezia Calcio continues to grow, as now there are 15 people within the club who have tested positive.

There had already been 11 between players and members of staff who contracted the virus.

A statement today confirms another player and three staff members have now also tested positive for COVID-19.

That takes the total figure up to 15, despite the fact Spezia have been training individually and following social distancing protocols since the first case on July 18.

Spezia’s chief medic openly blamed the outbreak on two players who “consider themselves anti-vaxxers and refused the vaccine.”

The squad has otherwise received two doses of the vaccine, but the second jab was too recent to give real coverage.

It takes circa two weeks after the second vaccination for the full effects to be felt.

COVID is already affecting pre-season preparations elsewhere too, as Inter’s Florida Cup match with Arsenal had to be scrapped because the Gunners had several cases in their senior and youth squads.
