Spezia are first side to win a Serie A match without a shot on target since 04/05

Spezia managed to upset Napoli 1-0 tonight without taking a single shot on target.

Thiago Motta’s side secured the three points at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after they were gifted a goal by defender Juan Jesus, who put the ball into the back of his own net in the 37th minute.

As reported by Opta Paolo, Spezia are the first team to have won a league match without taking a single shot on target for the first time since the 2004/05 season, when Opta began collecting this data.

The Ligurian side had to survive an onslaught in order to take home the three points, with Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli taking 26 shots in total, seven of which were on target .

The victory could prove key for Spezia, who now sit five points ahead of relegation candidates Genoa heading into the Christmas break.

Recent reports suggested that coach Thiago Motta was set to lose his job after the festive period, but today’s win over the Partenopei could secure his position, at least for now.
