Local reports suggest that Luciano Spalletti would have to pay a multi-million euro penalty should he decide to leave Napoli this summer.

Following the Partenopei’s recent Scudetto success, their first league title in 33 years, tensions have started to brew between Spalletti and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, owing to the coach’s contract situation.

De Laurentiis decided to quietly activate a one-year extension clause in Spalletti’s contract, which was previously set to expire next month, rather than sitting down and negotiating a new deal with the 64-year-old, who was hoping for a raise to reward him for his impressive work in the dugout.

As reported by Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli via TMW, Spalletti would have to pay an €8m penalty to leave Napoli this summer, a year before his contract expires. Should this be confirmed, it would seemingly rule out an early exit for the 64-year-old Italian coach.

De Laurentiis does not want Spalletti to leave and the two parties will meet again soon to try and find common ground.
