De Rossi is out of action for a month after aggravating a calf strain in the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid.

“Unfortunately I feel the weight of what happened to Daniele,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“If you put a player on the pitch and 10 minutes later he gets injured, it’s a sign that there was something I didn’t take into consideration.

“I have to take the blame and I’m sorry. I am the one who makes the choices, there are no excuses. I saw the training sessions and he seemed ready, but if this is the result then clearly I made a mistake.

“William Vainqueur has shown that he can be counted on, then from tomorrow we’ll have Strootman. He is in the squad and his recovery is evolving well.”

The Dutch international has barely featured for two years, since suffering knee ligament damage in March 2014.

He had surgery twice to correct the problem, most recently on September 1 2015.

Strootman has played for the Roma Primavera youth team in a bid to find full fitness, but this is the first time he’s been included in the senior squad since the surgery.
