“Diego Perotti is out of action with a soleus muscle strain and apart from him there’s only Alessandro Florenzi unavailable,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

Antonio Rudiger and Daniele De Rossi are also suspended, while Mohamed Salah is at the Africa Cup of Nations.

“We have always been a very entertaining side this season, the statistics show that too. We always said that when there are dips in form, we must make up for it with hard work, determination and how to win ugly.

“With what we’ve shown recently, I think we’re on the right track. The squad has understood there are moments when you need substance to create the circumstances for our attacking quality to make the difference. That’s an important sign.”

Spalletti is a former Udinese Coach, while Gigi Del Neri had a brief spell on the Roma bench.

“Udinese have a lot of talent and an experienced Coach. It’s perhaps easier for players to feel free in Udine compared to clubs like Roma, Juventus or Napoli, where you are forced to measure up to a more demanding public expectation.

“Del Neri is a strong Coach, someone who has always focused his football on the battle, physicality and counter-attacks. He has remained entirely consistent in his view of the game. His teams take your breath away, because they are so aggressive and leap on you from the first moment.

“I remember last season when his Verona came here on my debut and caused us huge difficulties. Del Neri plays the football he wants without fear or remorse, so I praise that consistent vision.”

Last week Spalletti said that Roma were going for Sofiane Feghouli, so with no reinforcement yet signed, did he expect to have a new player by now?

“I already said that I’d be fine even if there was no transfer window, because I chose this squad and want it to express itself to the full.

“Over the last week I’ve already brought some of the youth team players up to train with the senior squad and there will be more, as the Primavera have players ready to make that step up.

“I ask nothing of this club. I came here, throwing myself into the job with all my passion, feet-first. I hope to help some players grow and show their potential, such as Gerson.

“It will be tough, we’re going to have a period with 11 games in 40 days, but I have faith in this group not only of great players, but also of great men.

“There are some possibilities. There was also talk of potentially selling Kostas Manolas, but if my club does something to sell stars just to tuck some spare money away under the mattress, then that’s when I would kick up a fuss.

“However, if my club is giving its all for the team and to make us the best we can be, then I am fine with that. I don’t expect Charly Musonda to come here and win us games. I expect Radja Nainggolan, Kevin Strootman and Daniele De Rossi to win us games with their strength and determination.

“We are missing a few players compared to other clubs and so we have to be fantastic. The Fantastic XI. Juventus have more players than us right now, especially in midfield, so I have to ask my own players to do extra work and cover that ground. It’s a show of love for the club colours to give that extra and in doing so they become greater themselves.”
