Luciano Spalletti faces a touchline ban after he was sent off during Sampdoria-Inter, but refereeing designator Nicola Rizzoli admits his dismissal was ‘harsh’.

Spalletti was sent to the stands for what the referee interpreted as the Coach over-egging his celebration for Inter’s late winner at Samp in front of the fourth official, although replays later showed he was aiming his outpouring of joy towards the cameraman.

“Undoubtedly we don’t always read situations in the best way,” Rizzoli told Domenica Sportiva.

“We need to understand what happened, but there can be no red card for just a celebration. We have to see how the game unfolded. The referee was a bit harsh.”

Calciomercato.com notes the 58-year-old could be given a one-match ban, having already been warned and fined for insulting Maurizio Mariani after the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 defeat to Sassuolo last month.
