Italy national team CT and former Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti has officially become an honorary citizen of the city of Naples on Thursday thanks to his title-winning success with the Partenopei during the 2022-23 season.

Under Spalletti’s stewardship, Napoli won the Serie A title with a club-record 90 points, eventually finishing 16 points clear of second placed Lazio

That was Napoli’s first Serie A title in over 30 years, dating back to the 1989-90 season in the Diego Maradona era.

In recognition of his achievements, Spalletti has been granted honorary citizenship and is currently in attendance at the ceremony in Naples alongside Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

There had been doubts that both Spalletti and De Laurentiis would attend given the rift between them at the end of the 2022-23 season.

ADL had refused to publicly acknowledge Spalletti’s role in Napoli’s title win, which was one of factors behind the coach’s decision to leave the club immediately at the end of the campaign.

However, the two seem to have made amends over the course of the last week, with De Laurentiis finally giving Spalletti the credit he deserved.
