Luciano Spalletti had to watch from home where he is self-isolating with COVID, but was ‘very proud’ of the 1-1 draw with Juventus. ‘They proved they deserve to wear the Napoli jersey.’

The Partenopei weren’t just missing nine players through COVID, injuries, bans and Africa Cup of Nations duty, but also their coach, as Spalletti tested positive for the Coronavirus this week.

Dries Mertens had given them the lead, but Federico Chiesa’s deflected effort sealed the 1-1 result in Turin.

“We had come to Turin with the intention of playing for three points, despite the great difficulties we faced and had to overcome just to organise this match,” Spalletti told the official Napoli website.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t manage that, but are very proud with the performance offered by the whole team.

“It was a performance of great character, with technical and moral quality expressed by players who once again proved they deserve to wear the Napoli jersey. Well done everyone.”
