Luciano Spalletti praised Napoli for their ability to ‘fight for a victory’ against Legia Warsaw and go top of the Europa League group.

Europa League | Legia Warsaw 1-4 Napoli: Partenopei take Poland

The Partenopei had gone a goal down in Poland and risked a second when rescued by the woodwork, but turned it around to win 4-1 with two penalties, a Hirving Lozano tap-in and Adam Ounas moment of real skill.

“The team put in a great performance this evening, proving it is capable of fighting for a victory as well and not just being comfortable,” Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We made life complicated for ourselves with the early errors, but the lads were always determined to get things back on track. Whatever it is that you call squad rotation evidently worked.”

The coach had been irritated yesterday when asked if Napoli even cared about the Europa League, as they left Lorenzo Insigne, Fabian Ruiz and Victor Osimhen at home.

“Everyone did well, as we took the initiative and struggled a little, but this is a fantastic group. This squad knows how to play in a variety of scenarios.

“We conceded a goal that was avoidable, we made a lot of mistakes, but the quality of the team emerged in the second half. Once again, those who came off the bench had the right attitude and made the difference.”

The second consecutive victory allowed Napoli to leapfrog Legia Warsaw at the top of the Europa League group on seven points.

“This is a competition that will become wonderful and we need great things to stay in it. We can’t back out now.

“This is a squad made to play together, everyone is suited to each other. I congratulate my players, because they have the right attitude.

“Legia Warsaw caused us a lot of problems over the two games and they were even more determined this time after the change of coach. I am convinced they can still have their say.”
