Inter legend Beppe Bergomi believes Coach Luciano Spalletti is this summer’s best signing – “I never had doubts”.

The tactician left Roma at the end of last season, and has now taken over the Nerazzurri after Stefano Vecchi’s caretaker role.

“He’s great,” Bergomi told Corriere dello Sport when asked about Spalletti.

“I never had any doubts that he’d be good though, because I’ve known Luciano for a long time, I know how he works and the mentality he transmits to his teams.

“I don’t think he’s done anything exceptional or different from his normal approach, everyone knows how demanding he is and how intransigent he is with the rules.

“Nobody is allowed to violate them, because they all know what the consequences will be.

“The squad was strong last year too, but obviously certain rules weren’t applied to the letter and that made a negative difference in the long-run.

“With [Stefano] Pioli they started well and then…

“Spalletti is someone who gets everyone involved, he makes you work well and you know what you have to do on the pitch.

“Last year Inter got 62 points, not a lot if you think about what happened. They have an important squad which will be improved be either removing some elements or adding in others in the right positions.

“Spalletti has already proven himself capable of increasing the performance of those who have done less in the past. [Mauro] Icardi will improve even more with Spalletti.”

Bergomi was also asked which signings his former club should make.

“They’d be completed with a trequartista, because [Marcelo] Brozovic and Joao Mario aren’t suited to that role.

“Other that that, a second striker who guarantees goals because to finish in the top four you need to score 80-85 goals.

“Icardi, [Ivan] Perisic, [Antonio] Candreva and the others may not be enough.

“They also need a left-back like Dalbert, another central defender and maybe someone who hits free-kicks well.

“Then if Perisic leaves…”
