Federation President Gabriele Gravina and coach Luciano Spalletti will hold a press conference tomorrow following their embarrassing EURO 2024 elimination.
They were comprehensively out-played in a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, going out of the European Championship before the quarter-finals for the first time since EURO 2004, when they crashed at the group stage.
Questions are being asked of how the Nazionale will go forward in qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, especially after missing each of the last two editions of the biggest football tournament.
Pressure on Spalletti and Gravina
Spalletti and Gravina will hold a joint press conference at the Iserlohn training camp on Sunday at 12.00 local time (11.00 UK time).
This will be while the players and staff pack their bags to leave the centre far earlier than they expected.
Although neither is expected to tend their resignation, nor necessarily be fired, the pressure is already growing on them both.
Spalletti was only brought in to replace Roberto Mancini in September 2023, just days before two crucial EURO 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine.
The competition in Germany was the first time he had more than a few days to work with the squad at his disposal, but his constant chopping and changing of tactics stalled any sort of progress.

First Spalletti and then Gravina to go. We have a league full of foriegn players. 90% of transfers so far this summer have been on foriegn players. Gli Azzurri are done. Mediecore football. They dont even have any fight left in them. How a nation with so much football history has been allowed to produce such a terrible defence of theit title. We are the laughing stock of Europe. No one. I repeat. No one will ever be scared to play Italy ever again.

The players seemed too lethargic, there was no urgency in their play. You could see from the first minutes of the game how this match was going to end.Italy had no threat going forward.Let’s be honest, Italy have been very poor not only in this tournament but also faling to qualify for the last two editions of the world cup hasn’t helped either. Also until the series A clubs change by bringing through more Italian talent rather than foreign players, Italy will continue to drop further behind

I have followed the Azzurri since 1978 & the Italy at Euro 2024 has been the most clueless & disappointing Azzurri
team at any Euro or WC tournament during the last 46 years.. Painful to watch this team looked like newbies who had no idea, lacked skill, vision, heart, fight. etc. Thank you Switzerland for knocking out Italy and sparing Azzurri fans any further misery.
Let us not reward failure, unlike Mancini, with last world cup . Spalletti must go , bring up the under 21 coach. Gravina has to then show some courage(for once) and mandate there must be 4 under 21 italian players in each playing side or from younger grades , on the field at any one time. If clubs dont like they can move to foreign leagues, good riddance to traitors.
This guy was lucky to win one championship with Napoli and he ran away. Low energy, no tactics, poor team selection, and he is the coach of Italy? Said it in a previous post but seems more relevant here. BoB is correct. I watched countless serie A matches where the only italian on the field is the ref. Milan have 1 starting Italian countless other teams have even less than that.
More years of failure to come.

“you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”, as the old saying goes. You could have the greatest manager the world has ever seen, managing this generation of Italian footballers and it would make very little difference. The players are not of a calibre that they were up to 2006. Until that’s sorted out, we have to get used to this kind of performance. The 2021 squad over-performed, thanks to still having one or two players of character like Chiellini and Bonucci, but this merely papered over the cracks that most could clearly see.

I agree in several points , but let’s not forget they went on an unbeaten 37 game run so at the time they were worthy winners , the usual cycle is that we win something and then rest on our laurels, fail to qualify or flunk at the first hurdle , it’s been happening since 82 onward.
Youth development with baggio being reinstated. Slash the foreigner count , it’s the only way .
