According to La Repubblica, Luciano Spalletti can still include Domenico Berardi and Gianluca Scamacca in Italy’s squad for Tuesday’s game against Ukraine and Sky Sport confirms the call-up of the Sassuolo winger is an option discussed after Saturday’s draw against North Macedonia.
The Azzurri have a must-win EURO 2024 qualifying fixture on Tuesday against Ukraine following a disappointing 1-1 draw with North Macedonia in Skopje on Saturday. They have four points in three games, three below Ukraine who held England to a 1-1 draw yesterday.
With Italy needing goals against Ukraine, La Repubblica claims Spalletti can still include Berardi and Scamacca in his team ahead of next week’s game.
Federico Chiesa and Lorenzo Pellegrini pulled out of the team due to slight injuries earlier this week and have not been replaced, so Berardi and Scamacca can now be called up.
Sky Sport’s correspondent from Milanello Peppe Di Stefano claims Berardi’s call-up was an option discussed at Skopje last night, after Italy’s 1-1 draw with North Macedonia.
Spalletti had announced his squad on Friday, September 1 before Serie A Week 3 kicked off. He had not included Berardi and Scamacca due to lack of playing time in the first two games of the season, but they scored a brace each in the last match before the international break.
As highlighted by Italian sports papers, wingers failed to impress against North Macedonia on Sunday, so the media in the Peninsula, including La Repubblica, have urged Spalletti to call up at least Berardi for the next game with Ukraine.
In the meantime, Matteo Politano has pulled out of the Italy squad and Spalletti has called Riccardo Orsolini to replace him.
