Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora hit back at criticism of the delay in training. “The only alternative to prudence is to follow France and say football ends here.”

The Government decree for easing the lockdown measures was not appreciated by the world of Italian football, as it states a citizen can go running in a park from May 4, but cannot do the same inside a sanitised training centre until May 18.

“Team sports should hopefully resume from May 18,” wrote Minister Spadafora on Facebook.

“We are currently perfecting these guidelines and will pass them by the scientific committee to see if they are sufficient to guarantee safety.

“I thank (FIGC President Gabriele) Gravina, who denied the allegations that someone inside the Lega Serie A said there was a deal in place. Perhaps some Serie A Presidents like to go around spreading lies to put pressure on the Government.

“They haven’t realised this sort of thing won’t work anymore. Our prudence is the only thing leaving a glimmer of hope for football to get going again. The only alternative to prudence is to follow the example set by France and say football ends here.

“It all depends on our individual ability to respect the rules. If we think everything is fixed by May 4, we are making a big mistake.”
