England manager Gareth Southgate is looking forward to facing Italy, Germany and Hungary in the Nations League. ‘We’ve learned the most’ from the toughest games.

The Azzurri were top seeds in today’s draw for the 2022/23 edition of the Nations League, having secured third place in the 2020/21 tournament.

These matches will be played in June and September 2022.

“Great fixtures to look forward to, is my initial response,” England manager Southgate told the FA website.

Italy have plenty of history with Germany, England and Hungary

“I know the Nations League in this format is geared towards these types of games, so whoever we drew out of the first two pots was going to be a high-level opposition.”

It is a reunion with Germany, who they beat at UEFA EURO 2020, and Italy, who won the trophy at Wembley on penalties in July.

“That’s what we wanted, leading into the World Cup year. We’ve had a tough fixture schedule through the last 12 months, but a high quality of games is what helps the team to improve and they’re the matches we’ve learned the most from.”
