“It is always wonderful to see the team repeat what they did in training during a match situation. I am really happy, as this first week has been excellent in every way.
“I am trying to find the best roles for my players, while respecting my ideas of football. We are working on several different tactical systems. Today I fielded two midfield pivots, but I don’t have a preferred shape. We must learn to be variable.”
Gomez scored the final goal and it was greeted as something of a release by the striker and the Fiorentina fans.
“I am happy for him. You can see he has this great rapport with the fans and the city. We’ll try to get the best out of him and put Gomez in a position to score many goals.
“The people of Florence know how to recognise people’s values. Together with the team, I want to get as close as possible to them. The alchemy with the supporters is crucial, as it represents our soul. We’ll need their support in the difficult moments.”
Giuseppe Rossi is training separately as he tries to make yet another comeback from a lengthy knee injury.
“He is slowly integrating into the group work and will soon have time in games too,” noted Sousa. “I consider him to be a centre-forward.
“We know full well which areas of the team have to be reinforced. I’ve made my requests to the club and they have their financial parameters. We’re eager to make the most of transfer opportunities.”
