Paulo Sousa’s birthday was ruined when Fiorentina fumbled a lead at Torino and apologised for Marcos Alonso’s celebration.
The Viola had taken an early lead through Alonso, who was booked for over-celebrating and infuriated the home fans with a ‘bullfighter’ gesture.
“He did that because he is Spanish. He wasn’t aware of how offensive it could be to the Toro fans and I apologise. He’s a good lad and really did not intend to upset the fans,” declared the Coach.
These two clubs are twinned, so their supporters usually have a very strong rapport, but the gesture was reminiscent of Enzo Maresca’s mocking ‘horns’ for Juventus in a Turin Derby.
Torino fought back to win 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, ending Fiorentina’s perfect record.
“Toro made it difficult for us and when in front we pushed hard without needing to. We were naïve and Torino took advantage of the spaces we left.
“After the equaliser, I saw our heads drop. We were unable to cause them problems after that. We should’ve had more intensity and quality towards the end to fight back, but Torino deserved the victory.
“We must try to finish off games when we have the chance. The best way to defend is to keep the ball.”
