Stefano Sorrentino has made clear that he ‘never asked to leave’ Palermo this summer, amid speculation he was close to an exit.

The 35-year-old was one of a number of goalkeepers linked with a move to Juventus, if Marco Storari were to leave for Sassuolo.

Whilst nothing materialised to that effect, Sorrentino’s agent and the Rosanero’s CEO Andrea Cardinaletti have both confirmed discussions with Juve were held.

For the veteran shot-stopper though, it was not through his own doing or intentions.

“The club had told me that, for financial reasons, if there had been an offer, we would have talked about it,” Sorrentino has told the Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“But I never asked to leave and it bothered me to hear that I wanted to go in order to get closer to my daughters, who live in Turin. I am a professional first.

“I was in Serie B, we won breaking every record. Why should I go away once we reach Serie A? Here I feel important. This is one of the most prestigious clubs in the south.”

Samir Ujkani at nine years his junior is seen as Sorrentino’s successor.

“I do not feel so old. In June, the club will meet – it is right that Palermo has its own programs, I will have another year of the contact and I want to understand the project that will be there. Now I am just focused on achieving survival as soon as possible.”
