Roberto Soriano’s cousin reveals the Sampdoria star “had already signed the contract and considered himself a Napoli player.”

The deal collapsed because paperwork was not filed in time for the transfer deadline on Monday night.

Napoli are confident the move can be completed during the January window, but Samp are not so sure they want to sell.

“Roberto accepted all of Napoli’s conditions on Monday at 21.00,” cousin Saverio D’Avanzo told Cronache di Napoli.

“In order to play for Napoli, he also said goodbye to a very advantageous contract with Nike. Roberto signed all the contracts that were sent by Napoli to the hotel where the Italy squad was staying in Coverciano.

“He started filling out the federal forms too and considered himself a Napoli player. The problem is that on the other side of the fax nobody signed to validate the transfer in time.

“He was really disappointed and worried about his return to Sampdoria. My cousin is strong and will get his career back in hand straight away.

“Everyone loves him at Samp and I think the same would’ve been true if he had been transferred to Napoli.

“Roberto told me he spoke to Maurizio Sarri two weeks ago and the Coach strongly wanted him in the team. He even explained how he would be used tactically.

“However, I don’t think in future my cousin can accept Napoli’s conditions again.”

The issue of image rights has been a constant feature of Napoli transfer activity, causing the deal with Cagliari defender Davide Astori to collapse.

Unlike most Serie A sides, Napoli demand new players sign over their image rights to the club, which often means terminating existing contracts with sponsors who don’t fit their profile.
