During his interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter keeper Yann Sommer discussed a penalty kick saved against Italy in 2021, eventually preventing Azzurri from qualifying at the World Cup.

The Swiss international saved one penalty kick to Jorginho in September 2021, helping his side secure a 0-0 draw in a World Cup qualifying fixture. When the interviewer showed a picture of his save on the ex-Chelsea star, now at Arsenal, Sommer replied smiling: “I saved one penalty kick to Mbappé too, during the Euros. That was also a moment of great pressure for both. Penalty kicks are about feelings and moments when you have to make decisions. It’s a mental challenge as well as technical.”

Roberto Mancini’s Italy drew two games from two against Sommer’s Switzerland in the World Cup qualification group in 2021 and were forced to go through the playoffs that saw North Macedonia beat the Azzurri in Palermo in March 2022.

Jorginho had missed one more spot kick in the return leg in Rome against Switzerland sending his shot over the crossbar.

Sommer will be playing his first derby della Madonnina on Saturday and hopes to make more crucial saves against Inter’s city rivals Milan. During the same interview, he said he can’t wit to meet the Rossoneri adding that he’s studying their star strikers such as Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic.
