Yann Sommer urges Inter to ‘keep our heads up and move forward’ after a surprise Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid.

It was seemingly all going their way after 33 minutes, as Federico Dimarco had put the Nerazzurri 2-0 up on aggregate, but Antoine Griezmann replied within 120 seconds.

Memphis Depay scored to force extra time at the 87th minute and the teams could only be divided on penalties, with Jan Oblak saving two and Lautaro Martinez blasting the final kick over the bar.

“It’s tough, really tough. We had some good chances to score more goals, but we didn’t take them. At this level it’s like this. Both sides had chances, small details made the difference,” Sommer told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“Of course we are disappointed, we are out of the Champions League after a very tough defeat. But we have a very good team – we must keep our heads up and move forward.”

Inter were in such great form going into this match, winning all 13 of their competitive matches played in 2024 and were hoping to go one better than reaching the Champions League Final last season.

Instead, it looks as if they will have to focus only on Serie A, where they are already 16 points clear at the top of the table.
