Chris Smalling’s wife Sam highlighted that the Roma defender has been the ‘highest-performing English centre-back’ this season after he was snubbed from the Three Lions World Cup squad.

The ex-Manchester United centre-back hasn’t played for his country since 2017, so not many expected him to feature in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for Qatar 2022.

Nevertheless, the English centre-back has been a regular starter at the Stadio Olimpico under José Mourinho and his performances would have justified a spot in the Three Lions squad.

As highlighted by Opta, Smalling has been the highest-performing English central defender in Europe this term, based on their Index scoring system (76.3/100).

His wife Sam shared Opta’s Instagram post in his stories highlighting his husband’s achievement and adding that she ‘could not be more proud.’

Smalling, 32, joined Roma in 2019 and has scored three goals in 20 appearances across all competitions this season.

  1. Southgate ain’t selecting English players that play in Italy, plain and simple.

Nothing to analyze here, dude is still hurt from Euro 2020

  2. Well, you don’t tell me lord Maguire should empty his seat for Smalling, that guy is a real pocher in the box!

  3. Maguire that has been making costly mistakes all his life chosen in place of Smalling and tomori. England will still fail again

  4. i wouldnt have selected smalling, never performs good against good teams or even tatical teams – geenrally always makes a mistake to allow opposition to score.

    But they needed tomori

  5. Selecting Maguire is suicidal! The guy is not in the starting 11 at Man U. for a long time. He needs to lower his wages and move to another team to show that he is a good central half. Smalling has played well for Roma. He should be in the squad. Southgate is short sighted and should not be the England manager.
