Chris Smalling confesses Roma conceded ‘sloppy’ goals in their 6-2 Europa League semi-final defeat to Manchester United.

They had been 2-1 up at Old Trafford going into the break, with Lorenzo Pellegrini and Edin Dzeko goals, but fell to pieces in the second half.

"Massively disappointing. Especially that we couldn't capitalise on the first half. Just pure disappointment in the second half,” Smalling told BT Sport.

“The goals we conceded were sloppy. It's really ruined the hard work of the first half.”

Roma were also extremely unfortunate, as they lost Jordan Veretout, Pau Lopez and Leonardo Spinazzola to injury in the opening 37 minutes.

It meant they used up all their substitution slots, so couldn’t make changes when Smalling and Amadou Diawara were visibly struggling.

“This season we've had a lot of injures. It's not an excuse for conceding so many goals but it's not ideal preparation.”
