Roma have seen another proposal for Chris Smalling rejected by Manchester United and are starting to consider other options, it’s reported.

There was hope the deal could be done on loan with obligation to buy for a total of €11.5m, but it seems as if that too has been turned down.

It’s reported the bid was eventually just under that, at €9.5m plus €2m in bonuses.

Manchester United continue to demand €20m for the centre-back, who has his heart set on the Stadio Olimpico after an excellent season on loan.

According to Il Messaggero newspaper, Roma are due to make a different offer on Wednesday, but the Serie A season begins this weekend and inevitably they are also looking elsewhere.

Other candidates include Hellas Verona centre-back Marash Kumbulla and Torino’s Italy international Armando Izzo.

These two are also more adept at a three-man defence, a system that Roma coach Paulo Fonseca seems to be pushing for this season.
