The Giallorossi went into the break for international duty off a defeat to Atalanta, while Inter were beaten 3-1 away to Udinese.
They both need a victory to get back into the running for the Scudetto after shaky starts to the campaign.
“We are disappointed with the result of the last game, we played very well, created many chances, but that is football,” Smalling told DAZN in Italian.
“We worked hard over the last two weeks and today we must fight for the three points.”
The English defender is set to mark his former Roma teammate Dzeko, who is seeking his 100th Serie A goal.
“I know Edin very well, he’s a great player. It will be a good duel.”
