Slovakia international Milan Skriniar assures he wants to ‘stay at Inter’ and defend the Scudetto, but ‘still doesn’t know why’ Antonio Conte left.

The defender was one of the key figures in their title-winning campaign and now prepares to represent his country at Euro 2020.

“It was a long journey and we experienced wonderful emotions, as Inter won the trophy after 11 years,” Skriniar told Futbal Pravda.

“The early Champions League exit was a heavy blow, but paradoxically it united us even more. We started a long run of Serie A victories, managing to beat Milan, Juventus and Atalanta.

“The coach gradually instilled his vision of football into us, until we knew exactly where to be on the pitch. He first and foremost influenced us with his winning mentality and we players gave him everything to reach a result. Luciano Spalletti had already done well for Inter and Conte added something extra.

“The fact he left was surprising to me, but also to the teammates I spoke to. I only found out after I’d returned to Slovakia, and I still don’t know the reasons why.”

Conte terminated his contract by mutual consent following a change of the financial landscape at Inter, who would have to cut costs and potentially sell some star names.

However, Skriniar insists he will not be one of those on the way out of San Siro.

“I am not even considering this problem now. I want to stay at Inter and defend the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri colours. I am not distracted by transfer gossip.

“The victory with Inter gave me energy. I won’t lie, a few days of vacation would’ve been nice, but it is not possible right now. I can’t wait for the Euros to begin and hope we can put in good performances.”
