“S.S Lazio announces that the athlete Stefan De Vrij underwent microfracture surgery on the lateral condyle and an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy on his left knee this morning at the AZ Monica clinic in Antwerp,” a statement announced.

“The surgery, performed by the head of the Orthopedics and Sports Traumatology department, Dr Lagae was a complete success.

“The expected recovery time for a return to competitive action is about six months.”

Microfracture surgery involves creating tiny fractures in the underlying bone, which causes new cartilage to form.

A partial meniscectomy is where the damaged part of the meniscus is removed during arthroscopic surgery.
