Lega Pro chief Francesco Ghirelli has warned that the situation for member clubs is ‘worsening’ after reports Serie C could end now.

The proposal has upset Serie B, which complains Lega Pro made the decision without consulting anyone else, but Ghirelli insists it was reached ‘unanimously’ by his board and he is now awaiting a response from the FIGC.

“The board has decided unanimously and it’s a positive fact in this situation: the proposals will be submitted to the assembly, which is sovereign, and I won’t go these issues because I have great respect for the assembly,” he told ANSA.

“My job is to protect [Lega Pro] from external confrontation and bring it to the assembly. After that, it’s for the federal council to make decisions on these issues.

“It’s inevitable: time flows relentlessly and each day that passes represents less hope that our Serie C clubs, all sixty of them, can cross the frontier of the coronavirus crisis unscathed.

“The passage of time is a judge. For many, waiting another week isn’t a problem. For us, however, it’s dramatic. The situation has now worsened and this requires a new set of reflections.

“I’m in constant contact with all the Serie C Presidents, with whom there’s a unity of purpose.

“We share fears but also hopes and expectations. Our cries are for help and we’ve already asked the government and minister Spadafora to grant us support measures.

“Our football is made up of normal people, sprinkled with sacrifices. It’s a regional type of football and I’m worried that the social fabric we’ve built up could be disrupted, with sensitivity and attention to the youngest people.”
