Torino goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu still thinks about Davide Astori “every day” – “we grew up together”.

The Fiorentina captain tragically passed away earlier this year, found dead in his bed ahead of an away game at Udinese.

His death and that of Emiliano Mondonico took their toll on the Granata goalkeeper, as they were all together at the start of his career.

“It’s like a punch, one which wakes you up and at the same time puts you to sleep,” Sirigu told Corriere della Sera.

“I’ve known Davide since we were 17, we grew up togethr and were loaned to Mondonico’s Cremonese.

“We’d always talk about the boss, like when I ‘answered’ his criticism by throwing balls out of the training ground.

“For me, as for many lads of my generation, the death of Davide was a blow, something I still can’t explain.

“I still think of him every day, it saddens me but at the same time pushes me to keep going. Davide was an extraordinary person, in every respect. A life so beautiful, so suddenly destroyed.

“It’s a lump in the throat that won’t pass. I hope Davide and Mondonico are together now and having a good laugh, thinking about the poor idiot who remains here.”
