Roberto Mancini said Mateo Retegui is reminiscent of ‘Gabriel Omar Batistuta when he arrived in Italy’ so Football Italia takes a look at some of his goals for Tigre.

The Argentina-born striker is expected to start for the Azzurri against England on Thursday, in te first match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Mancini has been complaining about his lack of options in attack, calling the 23-year-old who ‘immediately accepted’ to play for Italy.

Not only Retegui has never played for Italy, but tonight’s match will England will be his first appearance on the European soil, assuming he starts over Wilfried Gnonto and Gianluca Scamacca.

“He reminds me of many Argentineans who have been in Italy. He arrived suddenly, so he needs time to adapt,” Mancini said at a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

“He is a classic centre forward, many compare him to Denis, I think he is similar to Batistuta when he arrived in Italy.”

Retegui, currently on loan at Tigre from Boca Juniors, has scored six goals in nine appearances with his club this season.
