Simeone said he watched his father Diego’s Atletico Madrid during the last lockdown to help ‘improve’ his own game.

“During the lockdown I focused on many aspects I needed to improve,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport. “Especially mentally.

“I took advantage of the time at home to watch many videos of Atletico, coached by my father, and some of my own matches.”

Simeone, who made his move permanent in September, has started all League games for the Casteddu since Eusebio Di Francesco took over at the Sardegna Arena.

“I think I’m growing; Cagliari can help me a lot to keep doing it,” he added. “The sports centre is beautiful, and the club is working very well.

“I’m fine here and I want to stay for a long time."
