Giovanni Simeone admits it is not easy to live in the shadow of his father Diego’s ‘greatness.’

The Argentine forward signed for Genoa during the summer’s transfer window, his first European club.

Speaking during an interview with Corriere Della Sera, the 21-year-old expressed his determination to prove his worth regardless of family connections.

“It is not easy to live with his greatness,” Simeone began. “I need to try, I need to show that if I am here it is on my own merit.

“It is not easy to live with his greatness,” Simeone began. “I need to try, I need to show that if I am here it is on my own merit.

“What have I taken from him? The ‘garra,’ which is the Argentine way of defining determination, stubbornness and anger.”

The player did however express his admiration for his father, labelling the Atletico Madrid boss, who also enjoyed spells with Inter and Lazio as a player, a master.

“My dad is still a master today. Did you see the Champions League the other evening against Bayern? Him, the stadium, the team…it is something unique.”
