Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone says the referee was right to send off Diego Godin but insists “he didn’t want to hurt Adam Ounas.”

Ounas left Napoli’s Audi Cup defeat to Atleti on Wednesday in tears after he was on the receiving end of Godin’s lunge, prompting fears that the winger may be out for an extended spell.

“These things happen. The referee rightly sent off Godin,” commented Simeone after the game.
