Verona striker Giovanni Simeone was very fortunate not to receive a straight red card for his scissor-kick challenge on Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez.

The Argentine lunged two-footed into the tackle as Nandez was running away on the counter, clamping both legs around the Uruguay international’s feet.

It was an ugly challenge and sparked a touchline scuffle with several players and Verona coach Igor Tudor booked.

However, VAR did not intervene to request an on-field review so that Simeone could have his yellow card upgraded to a red.

It seemed to be a challenge made completely out of control and extremely dangerous for Nandez, so the Video Assistant Referee should’ve at least recommended the referee view it again.

This was also a particularly tense situation, as Simeone was facing his former club, where he often struggled for form and was dropped to the bench.

It impacted the reaction the incident received on social media, with Cagliari fans warning Simeone ‘can never return to Sardinia, not even to pick up his things.’
