Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was left raging by some of the decisions made by Italian referee Marco Guida during their 3-1 loss at home to LOSC Lille in the Champions League on Wednesday night, labelling some of the official’s decisions as ‘hallucinating’.

The most controversial call came when the scores were level at 1-1. Atletico were defending a set-piece in their own area, and while the ball ricocheted around the box, it eventually bounced and struck Lille midfielder Benjamin André on his hand.

Guida, however, appeared to get the call the wrong way around and awarded a penalty in favour of Lille instead. Somewhat inexplicably, VAR did not intervene. Jonathan David stepped up to dispatch a routine penalty past Jan Oblak in the Atletico net.

Simeone: Referee must have been ‘hallucinating’ after Atletico error

Simeone, enraged by the costly call, said that Guida must have been ‘hallucinating’ when he made the decision to award a penalty.

“There was no handball, there was nothing. It was a hallucinatory error by the referee. I really hope we see something happen,” Simeone said, reported via Calciomercato.com

“It is impossible to explain how the VAR did not intervene,” he continued.

Simeone was also booked for his complaints on the touchline after the penalty was awarded.

Guida is the referee who will take charge of the highly-anticipated Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus in Serie A on Sunday evening. The Nerazzurri currently sit in second place in the Serie A table on 17 points, with Juventus just one point and one position behind them in third.
