Silvestre worthy of Italy shirt

Palermo defender Matias Silvestre deserves a place in the Italian national squad, says Catania director Pietro Lo Monaco.

Palermo defender Matias Silvestre deserves a place in the Italian national squad, says Catania director Pietro Lo Monaco.

There are suggestions that the Argentine-born stopper could soon get the call from Cesare Prandelli given that he has an Italian passport.

“I already advised Prandelli to select him while he was with us at Catania,” Lo Monaco told Radio Palermo.

“In my opinion, only Milan defender Thiago Silva is better than him right now in the Italian game. I think Prandelli has waited too long.”

Silvestre, 27, moved to Palermo from Sicilian rivals Catania during the summer. He arrived in Italy in 2008 after six years in the Boca Juniors first team squad.

Prandelli will name his squad for Wednesday’s friendly against America on Sunday afternoon.
