There was controversy on the stroke of half-time, with Sassuolo calling for Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to be sent off for a coming together with Gregoire Defrel.

Liveblog: Serie A Derby della Mole Super Saturday

It was the final move of the half at the Mapei Stadium, with the Neroverdi 1-0 up through a Domenico Berardi penalty.

Defrel pounced on a poor Stefan de Vrij back-pass and ran forward, getting to the ball and flicking it to the right.

That was also where Handanovic was already running, having realised he’d rushed off his line too late to cut the striker off.

They briefly connected with the trailing Handanovic arm, which was raised to show he was getting out of the way.

The referee and VAR opted to wave play on, so there was no review, red card or foul given.

It is arguable that Defrel flicked it to the right, which was where Handanovic was already running, whereas if he had moved the ball to his left, it would’ve sent him clear and any contact more obviously a foul.

21 thought on “Should Handanovic have seen red for Inter?”
  1. Even if not red, how you don’t give AT LEAST a Free-kick baffles me? That is just pure awful ref and He was like that the whole game.

  2. Single incidents can go either way. But to have similar incidents where the worse foul is not flagged at all and the lesser, similar foul is awarded with a game-winning penalty.. that’s a hard pill to swallow.

  3. No red card deserved, no foul neither, he didn’t take the player down, the attacker on the other hand throw himself thinking handa will foul him

  4. @Interista.

I agree it was not a red card and didn’t actually look to take the player down or hit him intentionally. But I did expect it to be given as a foul. If fouls are given for unintentional slaps or touches to the face in normal comings together, I did think it did warrant at least a foul. But yes, Defrel did go down too easily and a red card would’ve been very harsh.

  5. Wow, the Milan supporter who writes all the Milan editorials suggesting that there was a penalty by an Inter keeper and yet can’t somehow provide a better picture of the incident?

Handanovic is 6’4 with an athlete’s body mass. If he nailed Defrel the way that Defrel would want one to believe he was nailed, there would be blood, a bandage and a move to get him medical attention. Not Defrel springing back up like he was play acting, which he clearly was.

Handanovic’s arms were over his head the whole time he was out of his box and there was no way he hit Defrel unless Defrel made that happen, nose and all.

Perhaps someone who wasn’t already indisposed to dislike Inter would have thought about this in all the myriad of times they wrote about the incident.

It’s only contraversial because it’s Inter and F-I doesn’t like that team.

  6. This was not a foul, it was not called, and therefore could have been yellow for simulation. The dive was disgraceful and I feel secondary shame as someone who considers himself a footballer. The ref was terrible the entire game for both teams. How Lopez was still on the pitch, and no yellow for his cynical foul on Barella (he received a 2nd one later), and the ref gives a yellow 2 mins later to Inter for an extremely similar incident. The referee was responsible for the game flowing like this through his inconsistent and terrible game management. Inter won but Serie A loses with refereeing like this.

  7. clear red card. VAR i clearly ran by inter. for some reason the VAR knows when and when not to intervene. clear situation where they went and bailed out inter vs atalanta when the winning goal should have stood. i asked the question then, how far to you go back to look at a mistake in the buildup of a goal. this was a clear redcard. it really was disgraceful from VAR and the referee.

  8. It is arguable that Defrel flicked it to the right, which was where Handanovic was already running, whereas if he had moved the ball to his left, it would’ve sent him clear and any contact more obviously a foul.

Defrel already control the ball with his strongest foot, left foot. and with that angle the good choice is flick the ball to the right to dribble past Handanovic, but unfortunately Handanovic goes there too miliseconds before him which defrel can’t anticipated. But i think it’s not deserve a red card tho as defrel were fall down easily

  9. Handa once out of the box actually tries to jump out of the challenge with his hands indicating he’s not interested in the challenge. If someone can not see that then they’re clearly biased but anything with any attempt to play the ball then he’s off also the fact that He lost control of the ball and relied on getting a challenge from the keeper. On the other hand Sassuolo keeper inside the box gets Dzeko down (which is difficult) then gets the ball afterwards while inside the box.

  10. The more important QUESTION tho. Is to see if Football Italia would create a similar post when other controversial for other big teams happens. I remember one Cuadrado initiating an obvious contact against Perisic during a certain match that determined their CL qualification. That surely didn’t get a dedicated article with FI insisting there was a contact but now the standard is set I’m VERY sure incidents like that would be analysed more by FI.

  11. Everyone is blaming the ref for making a mistake. He called it as he saw it on the pitch. Too bad for Sassuolo the foul happened at the stroke of half time and the VAR was refreshing his beer so he couldn’t see it.

  12. No need for explanations. I watched the game’s every move, it wasn’t a foul. That’s some experience goalkeeping there by handa. The game was very fast and entertaining.

  13. An even bigger question than if FI is biased against Inter – this incident and whether Inter are bankruptcy is whether Deferel will live after the challenge!!!!

  14. Same as Ronaldo on Iuliano , he throws himself towards the defender (in this case Handanovic) but inter fans will say this is correct and the other case was “clear penalty”

  15. It’s not clear to me. They both seem to move to the same side at about the same time. Defrel seems to jump toward him, almost as if seeking contact. Equally though the whole “hands up” move by the keeper is exactly how lots of those types of fouls are committed, raise your hands and get your body in front of the guy who you know you’re going to obstruct. There is no way the keeper intended to jump out of the way, he is trying to stop Defrel with that “hands up” move. But I think Defrel is already trying to fall, and it’s not clear to me the keeper actually causes him to fall.

  16. On A Dzeko goal that was soo offside that even a blind man could see it they go to VAR because it’s in Inter‘s best interest to try to reverse the decision……on Handanovic’s call where the no-call was already in Inter’s favor we don’t even see the “VAR Check” appear on the screen…….i hope this is the kind of call that goes in Juve’s favor vs Inter so that Interisti get a taste of their own medecine ! have you seen the pictures? have you seen the play ? it’s an obstruction by the last man back it’s an automatic RED !

  17. @Solointer: the difference between Handanovic’s missed call and Cuadrado’s is simple: Handanovic is a missed RED CARD !! If only juve got that lucky last season since they lead serie A in Red cards last season
