Andriy Shevchenko admits he would like to return to Milan one day, but insists the Rossoneri’s season has been excellent regardless of a top four finish.

“Milan’s season has been great. They could not make the most of the game against Cagliari and now they are forced to win against Atalanta,” the Ukraine coach told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Rossoneri need a win against La Dea in the last game of the season to earn a top four finish, but they could even draw or lose if Juventus fail to beat Bologna.

“A coach is judged on his results, that’s the reality. Pioli’s work can’t be wasted. The team is with him, the results are good. It’s never easy to beat Juventus away,” Shevchenko continued.

“Unfortunately, anything can still happen, but I am optimistic. Atalanta wasted energies against Juventus and this can be favourable to Milan.

“Ibrahimovic’s absence has been felt over the last few games. Everything changes in terms of charisma because Zlatan is a leader, but he has a strong impact also tactically. With him on the pitch, it’s a different story for Milan, but hopefully, he will be able to help the team also from the sidelines.”

Would he like to return to Milan one day?

“Milan is my home and I’d like to return. If I ever have a chance, I’ll make the most of it,” the 44-year-old said.

“We are talking about the future. Right now, I am focused on Ukraine and Pioli must earn a Champions League spot.

“I support Milan and I hope they will finish in the top four, but Atalanta are a solid team. It’s a tough game.”

How about his friend and former teammate Andrea Pirlo? Would he confirm him for one more season?

“I am not the Juventus president, so I don’t know. Andrea is young and needs time. He’s faced difficulties during the season, but in the Coppa Italia he proved he can achieve results.”
