Andriy Shevchenko is confident Stefano Pioli’s Milan ‘can challenge to win this group’ ahead of Liverpool, starting with tonight’s Champions League opener at Anfield.

It kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

The Rossoneri were certainly unlucky in the draw, because they were paired with Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and FC Porto.

“This is a difficult group, but that’s true for all the teams and not just Milan,” Shevchenko told Milan TV.

“I think that Milan can challenge to win this group, but at the same time, it wouldn’t be a tragedy if they were to be eliminated in the first round either.

“It is a balanced group and the players can learn a great deal from this experience.”

Sheva was in the stands at San Siro at the weekend when Milan beat Lazio 2-0 to maintain their perfect start to the Serie A season.

“It was wonderful seeing Milan back in the stadium and with fans too. This jersey and these fans are forever in my heart. Forza Milan, always.”
