Andriy Shevchenko described the heartbreaking devastation in Ukraine as a result of the war and confirmed that some of his family are still stuck in the country.

Russia invaded Ukraine a little over a fortnight ago, bringing devastation to the country as tanks and soldiers rolled in, being led by a barrage of missiles and rocket fire. The former Genoa and Ukraine coach has been very outspoken on the topic, regularly providing updates on his nation and the difficulties faced by his compatriots.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Shevchenko described the destruction caused by the Russian war effort and the danger to his mother and sister.

“There have been many battles. My mother and sister hosted some people who moved in with them because they were in terrible conditions. In Bucha there is no food, no electricity. They are my sister’s friends and they had been living underground in a basement for five days.

“There have been terrible bombings in that area. Bucha and the neighbouring towns of Irpin and Hostomel, I know these towns well and they have been completely destroyed. There are no buildings left. I used to go to Bucha to train when I was a young player. It’s terrible.

“The humanitarian corridors were attacked by Russian soldiers. If my mother and sister tried to leave, I think it would be more dangerous for them.”

The 45-year-old Shevchenko was most recently the head coach of Genoa, overseeing 11 matches in the Ligurian capital before he was dismissed back in January.

The former Ukraine coach led his nation to the quarter-finals of the European Championships last summer, where they suffered a 4-0 loss to England.
