Andriy Shevchenko named Paolo Maldini as the symbol of the club as it celebrates its 120th birthday. “He represented my Milan, but also Milan through the years.”

Sheva gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport and spoke about who he felt was the one player that symbolised the Rossoneri most.

“I would say Maldini because he represents my Milan, but has also Milan through the years.

“The club have had many great champions: [Gianni] Rivera, [Franco] Baresi, and many others. Paolo is the symbol of my time, but he is also a particular player: his father [Cesare Maldini], captain, like him, and then coach, whilst he is now a director, and his son is also now playing at Milan.

“It is history that goes through many different eras, and I believe that that’s more unique than rare in football.

“For this I think that, in the end, if I really had to choose only one name it would be correct to pick Paolo.

“Milan’s 120th birthday is a celebration for all of us, not just those who were fortunate enough to play on that stage. Milan is unique, like a great film that never ends. Those who love football know it well.”

Shevchenko played for Milan from 1999 to 2006 and again in 2008-09, making 322 appearances and scoring 175 goals in all competitions.

He's currently coach of the Ukraine national side.
